The random memory of our first New Year’s together makes me smile as I add the finishing touches to the set up around me. Ever since that year, I haven’t bothered to greet my parents during the holidays, let alone spend time with them. They wouldn’t care.

But Macey and the Rosarios have always been there for me, so I knew I had to bring this one tradition to her.

When I’m satisfied the surprise is appropriately hidden from view, I make my way back to the sliding glass doors that lead to the living room of our apartment. Checking my pocket for the blindfold, I walk inside as Macey meets me.

Freshly showered, she’s only wearing leggings and a Thunder Stanley Cup Champion shirt from last year, but she could be dressed for a black-tie event for the way she nearly strikes me down with her beauty.

“What did you do?” she asks.

Grinning, I reach out in lieu of answering her. Macey doesn’t hesitate to take my hand, but she narrows her eyes in suspicion. She has a glow about her after spending the day making her favorite meals with Tita Gigi on the phone. I know how much it meant having her mom with her in any capacity, and it meant almost as much to me to see that happiness return.

“Do you trust me?” I ask, and when she gasps, I know she remembers challenging me with the same question all those years ago.

Her smile is as radiant as the stars on a cloudless night as she responds. “More than I trust myself.”

“Good. Put this on.” I reach into the pocket of my navy blue sweatpants and hand her the necktie.

She raises a brow. “I think I’ll look a little ridiculous with this on over a t-shirt, don’t you think?” Her sass makes my dick perk up, but the tiny uptick of the corner of her lips tells me she’s trying to rile me up on purpose.

“Tie it around your eyes like a blindfold, smartass.”

At first, I think she’s going to keep being difficult, but she takes the tie without another word and secures it around her head. To be sure, I test her sight, waving my hands in front of her face.

“I can feel you moving, Maxipad. I swear I can’t see a thing.”

I grunt in response and take her hand in mine. Pulling her along, I open the sliding doors and step through.

“Watch your step,” I warn, a beat too late because she’s already following without assistance.

We keep walking, and I can practically hear the gears turning in her head as she tries to guess where we’re going. Our balcony is the length of the living room to the other end of Macey’s bedroom which is the last door in the hallway. I bring her to the opposite end in front of her window, and squeeze her hand to slow her steps until she’s on the picnic blanket I found in the linen closet.

“Okay, Pepper. Sit down, but don’t take off your blindfold.
